ATCS FEED

STATUS: ONLINE

ADDRESS: roanokeva.dynalias.org Port 4800

The Roanoke ATCS feed is powered by a 2 radio installation.  System one consists of a Motorola Maxtrac 800 radio & Antenna Specialists 800mhz Omni antenna (approx 24' above ground in SW Roanoke), fed through 35' of Times LMR-400 coax, a MA/COM 20db preamp and Motorola noise filter.  System two consists of a Motorola Maxtrac 800 radio & 800mhz Yagi antenna (approx 28' above ground in SW Roanoke), fed through 40' of Times LMR-400 coax, a MA/COM 20db preamp and Motorola noise filter. System two was added to  boost reception on the Winston Line as well as some of the low spots around town (JK, South Yard, etc)  This system is also what is receiving several distant Whitethorne and Christiansburg District MCP's from time to time.  Both are hosted on a Dell P4 Optiplex PC running WinXP Pro. Currently 36 different MCP's can be heard regularly in the Roanoke area. A large part of downtown Roanoke is still on wire codeline but everything that is "on-air" is displayed on the layout. The northern part of the Winston-Salem District has just recently been placed on-air and is part of the latest kit release. Broadway (MP R7.9) to Firestone (MP R59.4) all seem to broadcast out of Broadway's antenna near 581 in SW Roanoke, so mobile monitoring will be limited unless internet is available.

Current viewable control points include:

24th Street (Shaffer's), Belt Line, 45 X-Over, South Yard, JK Diamond (2 MCPs), 510, Glenvar, VN, Salem Connection, WB, West Roanoke, 672, North Roanoke, Cloverdale, Coling, Broadway, Starkey, Boones Mill, Wirtz, Blaine, Powder Mill, Rocky Mount, Ferrum, Henry, Philpott, Jondee & Firestone.  Occassionally Singer, Montgomery, Arthur, Riverside, Kumis, Bradshaw, Fagg and North Fork come in.  Joe Shaw is working on a server near Christiansburg, VA to help pull some of these MCP's in better.

The Roanoke feed also provides coverage for the first few MCP's on the Roanoke District "H" Line towards Shenandoah, VA and is useable with the Roanoke District Kit as well as the Roanoke Terminal Kit and the upcoming Winston-Salem District Kit. See the downloads section below to download the latest Roanoke Terminal Kit.

The current v7.07 release is dated November 8, 2008.

After clicking the link, you will be prompted to open/download a listen.pls file. Open this file using iTunes or similar media player to listen to the feed. Apple iTunes or WinAmp are the RECOMMENDED media players and they seem to handle the streaming audio better than some of the other audio players currently available.

The Roanoke Audio Feed is powered by a Motorola Maxtrac VHF Mobile radio, capturing signals through a homemade copper J-Pole antenna. Signals are fed through 35' of Times LMR-400 coax to the radio and streaming audio duties are performed using SHOUTCast & WinAmp on a P4 Dell Optiplex PC running WinXP Pro.

Normal audio coverage varies depending on weather and atmospheric conditions, but usually extends from Roanoke west to Elliston and Riverside, north to Troutville, east to Bonsack and Demuth, and south to Boones Mill.

NS Dispatcher Territories include the "New River" (west of town - Christiansburg and Whitehorne Districts), "Lynchburg" (east of town - Blue Ridge and Altavista Districts), "Shenandoah" (north and south of town - Roanoke and Winston-Salem Districts) and "Roanoke" (inside the yard limits of Roanoke). The "Danville" Dispatcher can also be heard regularly talking to trains on the ex-SOU in the Lynchburg/Montview and Altavista/Hurt Connection areas.
